Fibromyalgia – Symptoms and Causes

By Mathew at 2009-08-31 04:05:24
Premenstrual syndrome is also defined in this way is it refers to the combination of symptoms (irritability, tension, headaches, bloating, gas, depression, fatigue, breast tenderness, and weight gain,) that affect some women prior to menstruation. The most common symptoms of Fibromyalgia syndrome include muscle pain, aches, stiffness, difficulty sleeping, and fatigue. Here's a closer look at each of these symptoms, and the treatment methods you can use to alleviate them.

Fibromyalgia is a neurological chronic condition that affects the musculoskeletal tissues of the body. The disorder is mostly responsible for inducing discomfort, pain and fatigue in the muscles, ligaments, tendons and in the areas surrounding the joints. People who suffer from fibromyalgia are constantly confronted with intense pain that tends to reoccur on a regular time basis.

Antioxidants can prevent cellular oxidation by scavenging (destroying) the unstable molecules before they wreck havoc. Though seemingly simple, incorporating antioxidants from the food supply or with nutritional supplementation can stop and prevent further cellular damage.

Another theory is that fibromyalgia relief can be obtained through the use of guaifenesin, an expectorant drug, avoiding salicylic acid (found in aspirin and some fruits), and following a low-carbohydrate fibromyalgia diet, when low blood sugar is also an issue. This fibromyalgia diet was proposed by a medical doctor (R. Paul St. Amand) in the 1990’s, when he observed that 40% of his fibromyalgia patients also had low blood sugar.

The condition usually appears after an injury, surgery or long illness; nevertheless, no specific illness causes fibromyalgia. It is also thought to be brought on by emotional, psychological, or physical drastic changes or trauma. Prolonged periods of stress have also been considered as a possible cause. It is also suspected that there are underlying biochemical causes -alterations in certain body chemicals produced in excess- even though there is no known anatomical reason for the syndrome.

The name fibromyalgia, introduced by Muhammad Yunus MD and his colleagues in 1981, literally means pain in the muscles and tissue. No ethnic group seems any more likely to have fibromyalgia;however women develop it approximately 8 times more often than do men. While the medical community does not yet understand the pathology underlying fibromyalgia, more and more information about this condition is becoming known.

Some of the other symptoms of fibromyalgia may include:

•Extreme fatigue,

•Sleep pattern disturbances,

•Irritable bowel syndrome,

•Bladder irregularities,

•Breathing problems,

•Trouble swallowing,

•Dizziness, headache,

•Facial pain,

•TMJ,

•Grinding teeth,

•Numbness,

Recently, much of the focus has been centered on the serotonin-norepinephrine descending pain pathway. (2) In this pain processing pathway, serotonin and norepinephrine are used by the brain as intermediaries to inhibit pain signals from the body. Deficiencies of serotonin or norepinephrine cause this feedback mechanism to misfire, and pain processing signals remain unregulated.

It is important to remember that the treatment must be individualized when addressing these symptoms. Therapies will not always have the same effect on individual fibromyalgia patients. The only way to arrive at a truly optimized treatment plan is through trial-and-error. Understanding this before treatment begins should help fibromyalgia patients keep a positive attitude while sorting through the broad collection of available treatments.
