Morbid Obesity – A Growing Problem

By Mathew at 2009-08-25 02:15:25
Morbid obesity is the term used to describe people whose body weight exceeds the normal body weight limit by 100 pounds or more. It can also be measured in terms of the BMI. A BMI of 40 or more indicates morbid obesity or clinically severe obesity. Morbid obesity, as the name suggests, is a dangerous form of obesity that often leads to numerous medical complications

Surgery is one of the methods used for the treatment of morbid obesity. In this article, you will know the basic information about how surgery is used in morbid obesity. Morbid obesity is a situation where a person is more than twice the normal weight for height. The death rate among these individuals is twelve times more than an obese person of the same age and the sex.

In the gastric bypass surgery the stomach of the patient is divided into two part with one part being the smaller part and the other one being the larger part. The smaller part is then considered as the main stomach and the all the intestines are connected to it. With the smaller stomach the patient just cannot eat large amounts of food and hence it helps him reduce the weight.

Frequently minor or standard operative procedures are major endeavors because of the anesthetics and preoperative problem directly related to obesity. Surgery for such morbid obesity has evolved over the years. Procedures short circuiting the gastrointestinal tract so that food can be short circuited to the large intestine before absorption can take place had so many disadvantages that it has been all but abandoned.

The first recommendation is that people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30 (the point at which you are classed as being obese) should be counseled on diet, exercise and behavioral changes to effect weight loss. They should also be set a realistic goal for weight loss. This is thought by many to be of little practical use and is felt to be more "political" in nature, rather than medical.

Obese persons experience many health problems, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, some types of cancer (endometrial, breast and colon), dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance syndrome, coronary heart disease, some digestive disorders, high blood cholesterol , certain bone and joint disorders, fatty liver disease, thrombosis, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, stroke, and gallbladder disease.

Around 31% of US people (supplementary to overweight) are obese with a BMI in excess of 30. Compared to the past two decades, the percentage of childhood obesity in the US has more than tripled. If this trend continues, it is predicted that at least 1/3rd of US adults will be obese by 2020. The US surgeon general report reveals that morbid obesity is liable for thousands of deaths every year.

Scientific research in to the causes and cure for morbid obesity continues to be conducted all over the world. But until we gain a firmer grasp on all the implications of the disease, it is something that patients simply have to deal with and work on, oftentimes for their entire lives. Medical science has come up with numerous interventions, including surgery, but these are not cures for obesity – rather they provide relief for the physical strain and consequences that come from being excessively overweight.
